The US EPA Brownfields Program puts both property and people back to work. This program helps communities across America convert eyesores into engines of economic rebirth. Brownfield redevelopment grants help revitalize former industrial and commercial sites, transforming them from problem properties into community assets.

EQ - The Environmental Quality Company, along with real estate developers such as Burton-Katzman, work together to redevelop these properties into viable living and working spaces for the community. EQ and Burton-Katzman Development Company have formed a joint venture to rehabilitate and develop brownfield properties in Michigan. Burton-Katzman, now in its third generation of real estate development, with projects that span commercial, industrial and residential development, identifies properties with attractive development potential. EQ then takes the lead in evaluating the scope and costs of remedial action to make the property usable. EQ utilizes its extensive environmental project management and facility operations experience to execute a remedial plan for selected properties.

EQ and Burton-Katzman work closely with local Brownfield Development Authorities (BRAs), created under the authority of the Clean Michigan Initiative, to secure grants and loans, and tax increment financing to fund the environmental site assessments and remedial actions necessary to make the property viable. Burton-Katzman then takes over with a land development plan that places the property in its highest and best use.
